Executive Summary

On behalf of Taiwan Liver Research Foundation (TLRF), this project aims to generate an online HCV digital ecosystem, increase public awareness, understanding of HCV educational gaps, and provide Taiwan HCV elimination progress updates. This is a collaboration project of Health Promotion Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare (HPA), The Gastroenterological Society of Taiwan (GEST), and Taiwan Association for the Study of the Liver (TASL) to provide updated HCV screening, diagnosis, and treatment data. This platform plays a pivotal role to guide efforts towards HCV elimination by 2025 in Taiwan. In addition, to showcase Taiwan achievement and share Taiwan strategies and the best practice with other countries worldwide.

Program Description

HCV elimination is a goal of the WHO, which includes a diagnosis rate of 90% of total infection, a 90% decrease in new infection, and a 65% decreased in liver-related mortality by 2030. Taiwan intends to accelerate the elimination of HCV infection by committing to treat 80% of eligible patients (including 90,000 patients who had been treated with interferon [IFN]-based therapy and another 250, 000 patients with direct-acting antivirals [DAA]) by 2025. In addition to the wide availability of pan-genotypic direct-acting antivirals, the elimination goal can be achieved with strong support from the Taiwan government including national budget allocation and setting feasible strategies. To achieve the WHO targets would require targeted screening programs to identify HCV-infected individuals, followed by linkage to care programs. In addition to prioritizing resources for screening and treatment, improve awareness of chronic hepatitis C epidemiology and care cascade in Taiwan is of paramount importance. On behalf of TLRF, we collaborate with HPA (who owns the national screen, diagnosis and treatment data) GEST, and TASL to generate this online HCV digital platform, to increase public awareness and understand HCV educational gaps. Real-time progress will be updated periodically to provide a clear call to action to inform healthcare professionals, healthcare decision-makers, and those involved in research, advocacy, and management of HCV on their roles to achieve this goal. This platform plays a pivotal role to guide efforts towards HCV elimination by 2025 in Taiwan.

Program’s Objectives

  • To serve as a single source of truth for HCV elimination plan and execution toward 2025 HCV elimination target
  • Increase awareness to HCV elimination
  • Provide HCV related education and best practice sharing on screening and linkage to HCV care
  • Discussion among HPA, TASL, GEST and TLRF to fine-tune HCV elimination strategies and identify area and population to focus and prioritize
